A joint CEOS-GEOGLAM workshop to develop to develop community good practice validation protocols for cropland and crop type maps
12-14 September 2023,
National Agricultural Library,
10301 Baltimore Ave., Beltsville, MD, USA
Co-organizers: Committee on Earth Observation Satellites Working Group on Calibration and Validation Land Product Validation subgroup Land Cover focus area (CEOS WGCV LPV Land Cover) and the Group on Earth Observations Global Agricultural Monitoring Initiative Essential Agricultural Variables Working Group (GEOGLAM EAV)
Workshop purpose:
Develop community good practices for validation of cropland and crop type maps and associated area estimation, based on the workshop deliberations from key product developers and users. Expected outcome of the workshop is a collaborative peer-reviewed publication focused specifically on validation of cropland extent and cropland type maps that will supplement the current effort of the CEOS LPV Land Cover focus area to update the validation best practice protocol for global land cover maps and the GEOGLAM Essential Agricultural Variables documentation.
Main discussion topics:
-
Typology of mapping EAV’s: cropland extent and crop type;
-
Sampling design;
-
Response design, including reference data quality;
-
Performance metrics/map quality.
Question to participants: Are there any major topics that also need to be discussed? Should the main discussion topics be modified?
